Supervised Contact & Visitation
Structured contact. Professional oversight. Child-centred practice.
Supervised contact provides a structured environment in which a child can spend time with a parent when direct or unsupervised contact is not currently appropriate, has not yet been established, or requires professional oversight.
May be appropriate where
- Contact has been interrupted or has not previously been established
- A child and parent are being reintroduced following separation
- Additional structure or safeguards are required
- A court or professional has recommended supervision
- A parent requires support in understanding and responding to the child's needs
- Contact forms part of a graduated reunification pathway
What supervised contact involves
- Pre-contact consultation and preparation
- Professionally supervised parent–child visits
- Observation of parent–child interactions
- Attention to the child's emotional and behavioural responses
- Supporting appropriate communication and engagement
- Managing boundaries and maintaining an appropriate contact environment
- Documentation and professional reporting where commissioned
- Recommendations regarding progression where appropriate
Supervised Contact vs Interactional Analysis
Supervised contact is primarily intended to facilitate and support contact between a parent and child in a structured and professionally supervised environment.
Interactional analysis is primarily an assessment and observational process. Its purpose is to examine the nature and quality of the parent–child relationship and interaction, including parental responsiveness, communication, emotional attunement, boundaries, engagement and the child's responses.
In simple terms: supervised contact facilitates the interaction; interactional analysis evaluates and understands the interaction.
The two services can be provided together where appropriate, but they have different purposes and should not be treated as interchangeable.
