Family Transition & Reintegration

Supporting children and families through significant change.

3 Dot Line

Family transitions can be difficult for children even where parents are acting with the best of intentions. Separation, prolonged periods apart, changes in care arrangements, reunification, relocation or changes in family structure can all require children and parents to adjust to new relationships and circumstances.

Kirsten provides child-centred transition and reintegration interventions designed to help families navigate these changes thoughtfully and progressively.

May involve

  • Reintroducing a parent following a period of separation
  • Moving from supervised to supported or less restrictive contact
  • Reintegrating a parent into a child's everyday life
  • Changes in primary care arrangements
  • Transitioning between households
  • Significant changes following separation or divorce
  • Family restructuring
  • Relocation or return following extended absence
  • Changes in parenting arrangements

A child's experience comes first

Family transitions are not simply logistical changes. They can involve uncertainty, loss, loyalty conflicts, anxiety, excitement, resistance and adjustment. The intervention considers developmental stage, emotional and psychological needs, existing relationships, sense of safety and stability, routine and environment, capacity to adapt to change, and individual views and experiences.

Graduated transition

Preparation → Initial Transition → Supported Integration → Increased Contact → Reintegration → Review

The appropriate pathway depends on the individual child and family.
