Parent–child Bonding & Relationship Intervention

Supporting the development and repair of meaningful parent–child relationships

3 Dot Line

Parent–child relationships can be affected by separation, conflict, disrupted contact, changes in family circumstances or periods of limited interaction. Rebuilding a relationship requires sensitivity to the child’s experience, the parent–child dynamic and the circumstances that have affected the relationship.

I provide structured, child-centred relationship interventions designed to support the development, strengthening or repair of parent–child relationships.

May involve

  • Re-establishing a relationship following a period of separation
  • Supporting a parent and child where contact has become difficult or disrupted
  • Strengthening an existing parent–child relationship
  • Supporting positive and meaningful parent–child interactions
  • Assisting with the development of trust and emotional connection
  • Helping parents understand and respond appropriately to their child's needs
  • Supporting children through changes in their relationship with a parent
  • Facilitating structured parent–child interactions where appropriate
  • Working alongside other professionals involved in the family

A child-centred approach

I consider the child's developmental stage, emotional needs, individual experience and existing relationships when planning an intervention. The aim is not simply to increase contact, but to support meaningful interactions that are appropriate for the child and sustainable over time.

I also consider the circumstances and history of the relationship, the parent's capacity to respond to the child, communication patterns and any factors that may be affecting the relationship.

Structured and progressive intervention

Depending on the circumstances, intervention may begin with assessment and observation before progressing to supported interaction and increased opportunities for parent–child engagement.

The appropriate approach is determined by the individual child and family. Interventions may include:

Assessment → Observation → Supported Interaction → Relationship Building → Increased Engagement → Review

Progress is considered throughout the process, with the child's wellbeing, experience and developmental needs remaining central.
