Reunification & Reconstruction
Rebuilding relationships. Creating pathways forward.
When a parent–child relationship has become disrupted, strained or lost, simply arranging contact is rarely enough.
Reunification and reconstruction work provides a structured, child-centred process for understanding the relationship, addressing barriers and supporting the gradual development or restoration of a meaningful parent–child relationship.
The focus is on the child
Every intervention is guided by the child's age, developmental needs, emotional experience, expressed views where appropriate and best interests.
May include
- Assessment of the existing parent–child relationship
- Understanding the history and circumstances surrounding relationship disruption
- Individual consultation with children and parents
- Parent–child interactional assessment
- Structured contact and graduated reunification
- Preparation and support before contact
- Supervised or supported contact where appropriate
- Rebuilding trust and familiarity
- Supporting parents in responding appropriately to the child's needs
- Gradual progression towards sustainable family relationships
- Ongoing review of progress and recommendations
Reunification is not simply about contact
A child being physically present with a parent does not necessarily mean that a relationship has been restored. Effective reconstruction requires attention to trust, emotional safety, attachment, communication, expectations, developmental needs and the child's experience of the relationship.
The aim is not to force a relationship, nor to determine the outcome in advance. It is to create a professionally structured environment in which the relationship can be carefully understood, supported and, where appropriate, rebuilt.
Graduated approach
Assessment → Preparation → Initial Contact → Supported Interaction → Relationship Reconstruction → Graduated Reintegration → Review
The pace and structure are determined by the individual circumstances of the child and family rather than by a predetermined timetable.
